Mariana Pinto dos Santos is an art historian and independent curator, with a PhD in History and Theory (Facultat de Belles Arts, Univ. Barcelona). She is a researcher at the Art History Institute at NOVA FCSH (Lisbon) and invited teacher at NOVA FCSH, Lisbon, and at University of Coimbra (2022). She is the author of the book Vanguarda & Outras Loas (2007, 2nd ed. 2022) and several articles and essays in catalogues and magazines about twentieth century Portuguese artists, modernity and modernisms, historiography and theory of art. She is co-editor of the Literary Work of the modernist artist and writer Almada Negreiros and has coordinated several editions of books, academic journals and exhibition catalogues. She has been invited lecturer at the University of Lisbon, Univ. of Beira Interior, ESAD (Porto), Cátedra Carlos de Oliveira (University of Zurich, Switzerland), Cátedra Almada Negreiros (University of Göttingen, Germany) as well as in museums such as Modern Art Centre-Gulbenkian Foundation, National Contemporary Art Museum (MNAC), National Museum Soares dos Reis and Casa Fernando Pessoa. She has published internationally at RIHA Journal, Konsthistorisk tidskrift/ Journal of Art History, Diadorim, Artium Quaestiones or Perspective. She curated exhibitions for the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, National Museum Soares dos Reis (Porto), The Palace Galery (Tavira), Instituto Cabañas (Guadalajara, Mexico), Museu Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum (Lisbon), Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar (Lisbon). She is the co-PI of the European-funded research project Iberian Modernisms and the Primitivist Imaginary (2018-21) (PTDC/ART-HIS/29837/2017) and a member of the research team of the FCT-funded project Unveiling the Mural Painting Art of Almada Negreiros (1938-1956) (2021-24) (PTDC/ART-HIS/1370/2020). She is a member of the Acquisition Commission for the Portuguese Contemporary Art State Collection (2021-22), nominated by the Ministry of Culture of the Portuguese Government. She is co-owner and editor at Edições do Saguão since 2017.
